Abiding City
Kevin Twit sent me a text by Thomas Kelly that inspired this one. I loved the text, but it was a little cumbersome in places. So I drew from the same Hebrews 12 passage and a few others, and shaped it more around my own neighborhood and our church in East Nashville. I am amazed at how God loves cities, the mess and glory of human interdependence. I grew up in the suburbs, so I feel like I’m just learning that.
Lyrics
Oh, sweet home of love and peace
Where pilgrims tired and troubled rest
Into the hope of Zion lean
Where in Jesus’ arms we will fall at last
Addiction’s empty promises
This broken world just can’t satisfy
A sweeter song, redemption’s bliss
Is sealed for us in paradise
Oh, lift up your head
For the day is near
we have no abiding city here
Spirit, heal our neighborhood
Until your kingdom work is done
Teach us what is just and good
As we look for the city which is yet to come
A city filled with gold and light
God the builder and the architect
When our faith is turned to sight
Oh, I cannot imagine it
